It is done for pancreatic cancer or chronic pancreatitis.
The standard Whipple procedure involves removal of the

  • pancreatic head
  • duodenum and first 15 cm of the jejunum
  • common bile duct and gallbladder
  • partial gastrectomy

Reconstruction consists of

  • Pancreatojejunostomy (attaching the pancreas to the jejunum)
  • Choledocho/hepatico jejunostomy (attaching the CBD/hilum to the jejunum)
  • Gastrojejunostomy
